About Muse and the Flame:
The title “Muse and the Flame” reflects the creative partnership that fueled this rhythmic set of eight original jazz compositions. Many of the trackswere co-written by Motley and his lifelong muse, demonstrating the power of their collaborative spirit. The music weaves a narrative, delivered by a beckoning pulse and infused with a rich variety of rhythms that keep the listener engaged. A standout example is “It’s Only Seven,” a tune written in 7 and 6 time signatures that showcases the trio’s ability to navigate complex rhythms with ease and grace. Other highlights include “Blue Pulse,” where Motley’s melodic sensibility is complemented by saxophonist Derrick James’ passionate delivery. The opening track, “Soundcheck,” showcases the musical chemistry between Motley and James as they engage in a delightful dance of call and response. The saxophone lays down soulful lines that the piano answers with bright, shimmering notes.
Throughout the album, the dynamic virtuosity of drummer Clarence Penn, the steady rhythmic pulse of bassist Edwin Livingston, and Motley’s melodic pianism come together to create undeniable trio chemistry. “Muse and the Flame” is a testament to the magic that happens when creative minds come together in collaboration, pushing the boundaries of jazz with their inventive approach to rhythm and melody.
